"Humpty Dumpty and Knee on his Neck"

Artist Statement

The killing of George Floyd by Derek Chauvin was an appalling public execution witnessed around the world. As I tried to make meaning of all that happened to George Floyd, the historic Humpty Dumpty story came to mind. The Humpty Dumpty narrative, which is thought to be fictional, focuses on a fallen, broken egg. Seeing George Floyd’s neck under the knee of officer Chauvin, a crushed egg came to my mind. As a non-objective, organic form-oriented sculptor, with this display, I sought to make organic shaped sculptures that seek to link the Humpty Dumpty story to what we all witnessed during the killing of George Floyd.  

 

The modern version of the Humpty Dumpty narrative is well known. My version of the poem places George Floyd in the role of Humpty Dumpty, and reads:  

“George Floyd lay dying on the deck 
With Officer Chauvin's Knee on His Neck 
Yes, He cried, but, no one tried 
To make George Floyd as he was before.” 

 

My work is an homage to George Floyd, and a homage to form and beauty.
