My Life in Academia
"ARS LONGA, VITA BREVIS"

For the majority of my life, I have been a professor of Art and an art administrator in an academic setting. During this time, I continued to produce art and remain active as an exhibiting artist. I produced large-scale welded constructions of steel and a variety of materials. While working in the academy, I managed to participate in several competitive national exhibits and annual competitions. Now that I have retired, I work on a smaller scale producing carved wood and paintings. My Art continues to be informed by much of what I learned while teaching. A focus on craftsmanship and attention to detail are two of the important lessons that teaching has brought to my practice as an artist. Another is the lesson of persistence with the process. Any success that I may have had in the class/studio and as an art administrator mirrors the joy and successes that I have enjoyed in my studio work and artmaking.
